Part-Time Gratuity in the UAE
The UAE recognises part-time and flexible work, and eligible part-time employees can earn end of service gratuity. Because hours differ from full-time, the figure is worked out proportionally. This guide explains the principle in plain language and shows a worked example.

What counts as part-time work
Following the 2022 reforms, UAE private-sector employment supports several models beyond traditional full-time, including part-time and flexible arrangements where you work fewer hours, sometimes for more than one employer under the appropriate permits. Your contract sets out the agreed working hours, which is the key figure for an end of service calculation.
Eligibility for part-time gratuity
- Part-time employees can be entitled to end of service gratuity.
- The general one-year minimum continuous service requirement applies — confirm how your service is counted.
- Gratuity is based on basic wage, not allowances, as with full-time.
The proportional (pro-rata) principle
The widely used approach for part-time end of service is proportional: you first work out what the gratuity would be on a full-time basis, then scale it by the ratio of your contracted hours to full-time hours.
Confirm the exact basis
The precise method, and how "working hours" are defined, can vary by contract and the applicable rules. Treat the proportional method here as a planning estimate and confirm your exact entitlement with official sources or your employer before relying on a figure.
Worked example
Suppose a part-time employee works half of full-time hours, has a basic wage of AED 8,000 for the role, and completes 3 years:
Part-time example
If the employee worked 60% of full-time hours instead, the estimate would be 16,800 × 0.6 ≈ AED 10,080.
Part-time vs full-time at a glance
| Aspect | Full-time | Part-time |
|---|---|---|
| Basis | Basic salary | Basic wage for the role |
| Day rates | 21 / 30 days per year | Same rates, then scaled by hours |
| Minimum service | 1 year | 1 year (confirm counting) |
| Scaling | None | Proportional to hours |
What to confirm with your employer
- Your contracted working hours and the full-time reference used.
- The basic wage figure applied to the calculation.
- How your continuous service period is counted.
- Whether any scheme-specific rules apply to your arrangement.
